In conjunction with the California Highway Patrol, San Diego Police Department, San Diego Fire Department, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D.), San Diego-based Passage Productions filmed and presented “Every 15 Minutes”, a documentary-styled presentation spotlighting the dangers of drunk driving, especially among high school youth. Presented at St. Augustine High School in North Park, “Every 15 Minutes” included scenes from a simulated car accident accompanied by student actors, along with typical rescue attempts and procedures of first-responder agencies. The presentation included a re-creation of a deadly accident complete with police cars, ambulances, paramedics and fire trucks…with a dramatic “jaws of life” exhibition and helicopter rescue.

Along with the re-creation, the program was infused with interviews of people with real-life experience in fatal accidents due to drunk driving. Their heartbreaking stories were dramatic, real and tragic. Recognizing drunk driving as a global problem, especially among teen drivers who are under the legal age to do so in the first place, the film hopes to spread the message to help prevent future accidents.

This date marked a new creative partnership between San Diego’s Valley View Casino and Passage Productions to produce a new series of television commercials and video marketing material for the 2010-2011 season. San Diego’ s Passage Productions continued their strong relationship with CONNECT.org by producing a live presentation for CONNECT.org’s 25th Anniversary Gala. This production, presented at the Torrey Pines Marriott, featured an exclusive performance by Grammy Award winning composer Marvin Hamlisch. 1. What’s the current climate for 3D technology adoption? It’s been around for a while…why the sudden push?

Passage: 3D has been around since the early 1900s, but advancements in digital film making have finally enabled film makers to take advantage of the 3rd dimension in a much easier and cost effective way. Now, with all the ways to distribute and view 3D content, it makes sense to consider going beyond the traditional video project to create enthralling and immersive experiences in 3D.

2. What kind of business applications have you seen enhanced through 3D technology? Do you see other applications that might be considered?

Passage: As 3D moves out of the exclusive arena of motion picture production and becomes accessible to television, corporate and internet video, people are starting to reexamine the benefits and applications for 3D in their media portfolio. A 3D tour can give new perspective to a factory floor or a real estate offering. 3D interviews can put people face-to-face with their business representative or other satisfied customers. 3D training can bring a whole new depth of understanding to the viewer and boosts their cognitive understanding.

3. What kind of impact are you seeing in the corporate world through 3D technology?

Passage: Companies who want to add a distinctive “WOW Factor” to their next company event have incorporated 3D presentations into their events. 3D video conferencing is something many progressive companies are starting to employ.

Outside of the corporate world, 3D documentary projects, 3D film projects and 3D music videos are allowing for deeper and more visceral connections to the audience. And we’ve only scratched the surface of this new frontier.

4. What makes your system more affordable…how is it different?

Passage: Our goal at Passage was to create a 3D camera system that was versatile, high-quality, and that could be integrated into our existing pipeline. Right now, many companies are scrambling to invest in new, untested technologies and software as they try to begin the 3D production process.

Passage Productions has a 3-year head start on the competition, and we have been able to successfully customize our current software catalog for 3D production. We can set up, shoot, edit, and deliver 3D experiences across a wide range of viewing options at nearly the same cost of a traditional 2D production.

5. What do you see on the horizon for the technology?

Passage: This year, movies like Avatar and the unanimous support of television manufacturers at CES 2010 tell us that 3D is the new frontier. YouTube has created a new standard for viewing HD 3D content via the internet, and the 3D BluRay standard was just announced. Even the video game industry will be making the transition to 3D. With the whole industry embracing 3D, it won’t be long before 3D content will be the standard, and both consumers and producers won’t settle for anything less.

With more than 800 regional executives in attendance, the MIP Awards presented winners in eight categories at the La Jolla Torrey Pines Hotel in San Diego, California, for the region’s most successful emerging technologies. 3D video glasses were distributed to the show’s attendees to experience the opening segment, which included scenes throughout San Diego county.
