CONNECT HANDS OUT AWARDS FOR INNOVATION

STAFF WRITER

A high-tech surfboard and a computer-simulated cosmetic makeover were among the winners of Most Innovative New Product awards handed out yesterday by Connect, an organization promoting technology and life science firms in San Diego.

The annual tribute to entrepreneurs is better known for lauding products only engineers could love. Last year, Connect honored Cymer for its deep-ultraviolet lasers, which etch ever-finer microcircuit patterns on chips used in computers, wireless phones and electronic appliances everywhere. This year, San Diego’s Firewire Surfboards won the group’s first award for Sports and Action. The engineering and materials in the company’s Direct Drive board make it lighter, stronger and more environmentally friendly.

Another consumer product, Web site TAAZ.com, won the Software & IT category. The system from Photometria lets users upload photos of themselves and then apply “realistic virtual makeovers” of makeup and hairstyles.

Other winners were:

Aerospace and Security Technologies – Vue Personal Video Network from Avaak and Sky Warrior Block Zero Unmanned Aircraft System from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems. Vue is a home monitor and security system. Block Zero is an unmanned military craft used for surveillance, reconnaissance and tactical strikes.

Clean Technology – Energico from Reaction Design, a software application for design of low-emission engines for power generators and vehicles.

Hardware and General Technology – Cipher Module from Semtek, a security platform to reduce credit card fraud at the point of sale.

Life Science Diagnostics and Research Tools – SKi Pro from Silicon Kinetics, a 3-D chip to analyze biomolecular interaction for drug and vaccine research.

Life Science Medical Products – Catheter Ablation System from Ablation Frontiers, a device to treat atrial fibrillation, an abnormal heart rhythm.

Wireless Communications – PortaBella from Mushroom Networks, a device that can make up to five connections to cellular data networks to create a single, high-speed broadband connection.

In addition to the innovation awards, Connect presented Pyxis, now a Cardinal Health company, the William W. Otterson Award, which recognizes a technology or product developed in San Diego that has made a significant positive impact on quality of life. Pyxis created MedStation, an automated medication dispensing system for hospitals and other health care facilities.
